The stuff of dreams

Joel KellyMidland Kalamunda Reporter

The once off-the-wall art of preparing, stuffing and mounting animals is now enjoying a revival and Simply Secondhand in Midland has become the largest purveyor of taxidermy animals in the state.

Once just a musty furniture store, Simply Secondhand has transformed itself into the go-to destination for garage paraphernalia, records and taxidermy heads.

Co-owner Elenie White said they bought a private collection about two years ago and found Perth had developed a taste for preserved animals.

Since then, collectors have traded with the shop and more collections have been acquired.

Dozens of species, from antelopes to zebras, now adorn the walls of the Midland second-hand merchant and attracts a diverse customer base.

"The reaction has been good. Obviously there have been a few people that have come in and been disgusted but they get over it pretty quick," Ms White said.

"They are all second-hand and have been ethically acquired."

Soon the shop will acquire a wolverine and a whole sheep.
