Then there was the tantalising smell of the bacon and ham counter, competing with the saliva-producing stimulus of the tea and coffee department, and the compelling aroma of the bakery, buns, scones, matchsticks and vanilla slices.

All those thoughts bring back memories of Perth’s first department store, sadly no longer with us.

However, to those of us of a certain age, the recollections are part of the woven fabric of our lives.

The memories I recall are still vivid to me today.

My mother worked on the bakery counter and as a boy attending Perth High School, across the way in James Street, I would most days during the lunch break nip across to say hello to my mum.
