INTERNATIONAL hockey is coming to the eastern suburbs when the Hockeyroos take on Spain at Guildford Grammar School next year on January 15 and 16.

The fourth-ranked Hockeyroos will meet world number 11 Spain when the school hosts two fixtures of the five-match Hockey Test Series between the women’s national teams.

The Test Series will form crucial preparations for the Hockeyroos ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April.

Headmaster Stephen Webber said it was an exciting opportunity for the School to partner with Hockey Australia and bring international hockey to Perth’s eastern suburbs.

“The Spain Test series will be our first matches in 2018 which is a big year for us, so it’s great to be able to play good opposition in Perth where we are based,” Hockeyroos head coach Paul Gaudoin said.

“The recent tournaments we’ve played have given us a good opportunity to assess our playing group and we’ll soon announce our national squad for 2018.

“The Spain Test series will be the first opportunity to bring those players together competitively for matches ahead of the Commonwealth Games and World Cup.”

The Kookaburras will play a four-match test series against the Netherlands’ men’s hockey team in Perth and Narrogin during January and February.

The series are the first time an Australian side has played in WA since May 2016.

Hockey WA chief executive Stuart Gilsenan said it was great news for the State. “It’s been a while since we’ve had international fixtures in WA so we’re really excited to be back hosting such fantastic fixtures with some the most exciting players in the world,” he said.

The Hockeyroos will play Spain in matches at Guildford Grammar on January 15 and 16, Warwick Hockey Centre on January 18 and 21 and Perth Hockey Stadium in Bentley on January 20.

Tickets $5 and are available online at www.hockey.org.au/2018tests.
