TAEKWONDO talent Shante Regnault (10) is dreaming big and with a national championship already under her belt may one day compete for Australia.

The Year 5 student started taekwondo at six after her mum enrolled her so she could learn self defence.

“I competed in my first tournament when I was seven and I had so much fun I wanted to continue competing in future events,” Shante, of Swan View, said.

“Taekwondo is important to me because it keeps me fit and I look forward to training every day.

“I train six days a week and I keep striving to be as good as I can be.”

Of her many wins, Shante said her proudest moment was becoming the 2016 Australian National Taekwondo Champion. “It was an amazing experience,” she said.

“I am also the current WA State Taekwondo Champion and have been selected as part of the state team.

“At the moment I am training hard to compete at the 2017 Nationals in Bendigo in Victoria in October.”

She said a good competitor must have a smart game plan and tactics to do well throughout the rounds.

“A challenging opponent for me is someone who doesn’t hold back and will continue to push me to my limits,” she said.

“I have big plans for my future.

“I intend to keep training on a national and international level, hoping to compete at future world championship events and eventually the Olympic Games.”

Shante has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star Individual category in the Community Newspaper Group’s Local Sports Star Awards.
