A MIDLAND karate club’s team has won gold at a kata event in Victoria.

Phillip Salmon of Sensei Bob Allen’s Swan Hills Goju Ryu Karate club in Midland represented WA at the Australian Karate Federation National Championship Tournament in Glen Waverley Victoria from August 12-14.

He was joined by teammates Theo Prinsloo and Tom Pettit.

Salmon, who lives in Mt Lawley, said he had put in many extra hours, working on specifics like transitions between movements and sharp and snappy techniques.

Kata is a series of set patterns representing karate moves and is judged on criteria including accuracy and effectiveness of techniques.

Salmon said he loved the sense of community among his fellow practitioners and was excited to be working with his partners Tom Pettit and Theo Prinsloo.

“With karate having recently been added to the list of events for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, this is a very exciting time,” Allen said.
