“Speed skaters entered the races from 100m upwards, whereas the long distance skaters were racing in events up to 42km.”

Each State runs their championships and the skaters have to complete a variety of races.

There is a large amount of training that takes place after the selection has been made, done at Midvale for some skaters.

Training is two and a half hours, four days a week, with some running and cycling work also completed at home.

This includes uniforms, flights, car hire and accommodation, even though the teams do some fundraising.
