WACA Premier Cricket: Midland Guildford and University evenly poised following day one of clash

Justin BianchiniMidland Kalamunda Reporter

UNIVERSITY and Midland Guildford appear evenly matched following the end of day one, with both sides putting in impressive all-round performances on Saturday at James Oval.

The decision from Midland Guildford to send University in to bat first turned out to be a great one, as the visitors took 5-52 in the blink of an eye.

However, University’s middle order came to the rescue, with Viv Paver and captain Matthew Birrell combining for a gritty 84-run partnership.

After Paver was dismissed for 57, Birrell continued his good form from last round, with another momentum shifting 85-run partnership with Sean Stuart.

Captain Birrell finished the day on 73, leaving his side steady at 7-221.

Stuart and Rex Strickland continued to score quickly in the dying stages of the innings, finishing with 261.

Midland Guildford responded expertly before the end of the day’s play, sitting on 0-47 with Hayden Cobley and James Kirwan at the crease.

Midland Guildford will continue the run chase this Saturday at 11.40am at James Oval.
