MIDLAND Guildford suffered an agonising one-run first-innings defeat on Saturday at the hands of Scarborough, following a tantalising final day of cricket at Abbett Park.
Starting the day at 4-128 with a further 66 runs to chase down for victory, Midland Guildford resumed its innings disastrously, losing four wickets in the space of 14 runs, as Lachlan Tyler and Andrew Rule ripped through the middle order.
However, at 8-142, a slight glimmer of hope appeared for Midland Guildford in the form of Keaton Critchell and captain Ashley Mucciarone.
The pair added 50 runs before Mucciarone was removed at 9-192.
With Midland Guildford trailing by a run, the unthinkable happened; Critchell was dismissed the very next ball, handing the visitors a crushing first-innings loss.
Rule was undoubtedly the pick of the bowlers, taking an impressive 4-20.
With a small amount of time left in the day, Scarborough returned to the crease in an attempt to steal an outright win.
The Gulls managed to score 3-219 off 42 overs before the end of the day, settling for a first-innings victory.
However, that did not stop Nicholas Maiolo from blasting an unbeaten 104 from 105 deliveries, which included 12 fours and two sixes.
