Justin BianchiniMidland Kalamunda Reporter

MIDLAND Guildford is just 66 runs shy of claiming a first-|innings victory following a productive first day last Saturday against Scarborough at Abbett Park.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Scarborough found itself in trouble early, losing 2-13.

However, Nicholas Maiolo and Josh Philippe quickly steadied the ship, amassing 87 during their third-wicket partnership.

Following Philippe’s dismissal after a well-earned half-century, Maiolo continued to find the boundary, boosting the total to 165 after a 65-run stand with Liam Knight.

Although Scarborough was seemingly cruising at 3-165, Midland Guildford fought its way back into the match, with Charlie Cassell ripping through Scarborough’s batsmen.

The Gulls lost their final seven wickets for a paltry 28 and ended their innings all out for 193 after just 43 overs.

Cassell ended the day with a fantastic five-wicket haul, while Maiolo was his side’s most prolific batsmen, scoring 74 from 92 and crunching 15 boundaries.

Midland Guildford then began its innings in similar style to Scarborough, struggling early at 2-18.

However, Hayden Cobley and Julian Crudeli helped boost the total to 4-128 before the end of the day’s play.
