City of Wanneroo residents will be given an opportunity to brush up on their bushfire readiness thanks to a free event hosted by the city.

It will be held at the Bunnings Mindarie car park on Saturday, April 20, from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

The city’s Prepare Together project provides information and resources to help the community respond to the threat of natural hazards and other major emergencies.

Mayor Linda Aitken said with 90 per cent of the city in a bushfire prone area, it was important all residents were ready for an emergency.

“The recent Mariginiup bushfire showed just how quickly and easily a bushfire can spread — in just four days the fire burned through 1900 hectares and destroyed 18 homes before firefighters were able to contain the blaze,” she said.

“The bushfire had a devastating impact and the city continues to work closely with the State Government and support agencies to help the community get back on its feet.

“With the risk of bushfires increasing, this may not be an isolated incident, but you can act now to prepare yourself, your home and your property for an emergency by taking few simple steps.”

The community event will also include a meet and greet with firefighters and emergency services volunteers, demonstrations, a sausage sizzle and kids’ activities.
