Yet all these, plus carved fruit and rapping baristas, greeted patrons at a McDonald's restaurant in Butler last week.

Shanti Sivaraj, who is licensee of the restaurant on Butler Boulevard and five others in the northern suburbs, said the black-tie event on July 6 aimed to reinvent McDonald's as a fine dining experience.

Mr Sivaraj hosted about 50 people for a five-course degustation meal to promote the "create your taste" burger and table service experience.

"McDonald's is innovating and changing to meet the needs of our customers," he said.

"Western Australians take their burgers very seriously, so we knew it was time to start letting people create the flavour combinations that suit them."
