The Coles store has a trolley with a seat designed for children with a disability, which took two years of research to design.

QHDC Australia manufactured the trolleys, which can carry a child weighing up to 70kg.

Coles operations and supply chain director Andy Coleman said the trolley allowed parents or carers to put their shopping in the trolley while having their child seated safely.

"This is the most significant roll-out of additional needs trolley by a supermarket in Australia and we hope it will make a real difference to parents or carers in Butler who have children with a disability."

Australian Network on Disability deputy chief executive Jason Barker said it was a good initiative.

"Shopping is a task that many of us take for granted " this initiative means families supporting a young person with additional needs will be able to get out and about and do the shopping more easily, he said.

The trolley, based on a US trolley known as "Caroline's Cart", has padding on the sides, a harness and additional support in its structure.
