YANCHEP’S innovation research and enterprise hub officially opened this month.

The $10 million first stage of the Y-Hub on Yanchep Beach Road includes two two-storey buildings that house a co-working space and UWA’s honey bee co-operative research centre.

Developer Yanchep Beach Joint Venture (YBJV) plans to invest another $5 million in economic development generating programs and expects the Y-Hub to play a role in job creation for the region.

The Honey Bee Products Co-operative Research Centre will further research and development of the expanding honey industry in WA, and the hub will be home to more than a dozen PhD students and researchers from UWA.

In addition, the hub will provide support and business capacity building programs for existing local business through the Yanchep Two Rocks Business Association and coworking and collaborative spaces.

Education Minister Sue Ellery, YBJV chief executive Gin Ang and Pearce MHR Christian Porter officially opened the hub on September 1.

Mr Ang said the opening of the centre as a major step in the development of Yanchep, noting that education, training and start-up incubation were vital to the long-term sustainability of the region.

“The YBJV’s Yanchep Project will create more than 50,000 local jobs at 75 per cent local employment self-sufficiency, with approximately 20,000 of those new employment opportunities expected to be created in the new Yanchep CBD,” he said.

“These ‘driver jobs’ will support further employment opportunities in the Yanchep and Two Rocks area.”

YBJV board president Hirotumi Nomoto travelled from Tokyo to attend the opening, and guests at the launch included local business people, developers, educators, volunteers, Butler MLA John Quigley and City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts .

YBJC executive manager Jon Kelly praised the Federal and State governments for announcing the $300 million rail extension to Yanchep earlier this year, which is due to be completed by 2021 and has triggered more economic activity in Yanchep.

“With the growth in the northern corridor of Perth and especially Yanchep, the recognition by State and Federal governments of the importance of this investment is a significant boost for the region,” he said.
