Wanneroo councillor in new bid for Yanchep men’s shed

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

WANNEROO Councillor Sabine Winton will present a motion to set up a men’s shed in Yanchep or Two Rocks at tomorrow night’s council meeting.

Following discussion at a Two Rocks Yanchep Residents Association meeting earlier this year, Cr Winton originally tried to move an amendment to investigate creating the shed at the Yanchep Sports and Social Club in June.

But because the motion being considered at the time was to cancel plans for transportable buildings at the site, her peers opposed the amendment.

Cr Winton has put forward a motion on notice for the August 16 meeting to ask administration to undertake consultation and investigations into establishing a men’s shed in the area.

“I have had discussions with many in the community at Yanchep, including the sports club itself, who would be most supportive of a transportable on site to support a men’s shed in the Yanchep and Two Rocks area,” her August motion said.

At their June 28 meeting, councillors agreed to decline all tenders for transportable buildings as a meeting space for community groups after receiving written advice from the club that it did not want them.

About 30 people attended a community meeting at Yanchep Sports Club recently, where a steering committee was set up for the Yanchep Community Men’s Shed.

The committee is chaired by Malcolm Gow, with Colin Vann as his deputy, Ron Bartle as treasurer and Gavin Moore as secretary.
