TWO Rocks residents have stairs to access to their northern beach almost two years after a storm damaged the original staircase.
The City of Wanneroo has restored access with completion of a $385,000 staircase, with $375,000 funded by the State Government.
Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City removed the previous staircase in October 2016 amid concerns for public safety from beach erosion and structural damage following storms in May that year.
“Our residents’ safety is a priority for the City of Wanneroo and we thank them for their patience,” she said.
“The new staircase will provide year-round safe pedestrian access to this popular beach and viewing platform.”
The structure is set back from the original location with steel piles driven into the underlying bedrock, and the staircase and viewing platform have an aluminium substructure and fibre reinforced plastic decking.
Mrs Roberts acknowledged that Butler MLA John Quigley’s involvement in securing State funding to cover the full cost.
“I would also like to extend my thanks to the Two Rocks community for their involvement during the public consultation phase,” Mrs Roberts said.
“This helped secure $250,000 State Government funding through the Local Projects, Local Jobs program.
“The City was also successful in receiving $125,000 funding under the state government’s Coastal Adaptation and Protection grant scheme.”
