THE Alkimos Scout Group recently did a beach clean-up at Alkimos Beach with Perth Natural Resource Management (NRM).
The NRM is a not-for-profit organisation with a focus on the natural environment and enhancing it for the benefit of the community.
The Scouts learned about the hazards facing marine life and the coast, what people can do to protect the coast and oceans, and what flora and fauna are found in the local coastal environment.
In the 45-minute clean-up, the group collected two large garbage bags of rubbish with the largest item an abandoned picnic chair.
“Most of the waste collected consisted of small broken plastic parts and bottle lids that would have been most likely washed ashore,” Scout leader Ryan Scott said.
“They are the ones that cause most of the havoc and this is usually the type of plastic that gets eaten by birds and other sea animals.”
The scouts, who also had a sausage sizzle at the Alkimos Surf Life Saving Club, hope to make the beach clean-up a bi-annual event.
