Alkmios Baptist College students favour nature over TV

VIDEO games, smart phones and touch screens are not for these students.

Alkimos Baptist College’s new nature play area harks back to a time when imagination was the prime source of a child’s entertainment.

In a move that could uncover a future Jamie Oliver, the primary schoolers are growing a herb and vegetable garden.

Year 3 teacher Troy Barrett was buoyed to see the vibrancy it had added to the playground, which borders the junior primary classrooms.

“Students have the opportunity to run, play and discover in this area, which features decades’ old timber logs, wooden bridges and mulched areas,” he said.

“The nature play area encourages a lifestyle where students can go outside and play games in their garden instead of playing video games inside and watching TV.”

The Merriwa school’s site opened on March 16, with students from Kindergarten to Year 6 using the play area weekly.
