Mindarie Senior College celebrated the opening of its amphitheatre and student car park on March 8.

Principal Janice Sander, who is on long service leave this year, returned to join the celebration.

“The idea behind this amphitheatre and quiet area came out of a sustainability meeting with several teachers,” she said.

“This area lent itself to an amphitheatre.

“I hope this recreational area is used frequently and by many and I also hope we will have many arts events here in the future.

“We decided to put the car park in to alleviate congestion – many of the students here are now driving to and from the college.”

Setting the tone for future events, WA Academy of Performing Arts singer Mia Formentin and guitarist Jack Maher performed Valerie by Amy Winehouse and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley.

Acting principal Rick Gendle said the audience of music students would have been inspired by their take on the popular hits.

Former students Daniel Ang and Emily Hodson performed James Bay’s Let it go.

The amphitheatre project, car park and additional work to create outdoor learning tables cost about $300,000.
