Autism support group arrives

Quinns Rocks resident Gillian Gore has worked with children with special needs for 18 years and met Padbury mother Helen Owen last year, whose son is autistic.

“Helen said she was aware of a group of parents who wanted to come together but they needed someone to organise it,” Mrs Gore said.

With support from Developmental Disability WA, the Joondalup Autism Mum’s Group held its first meeting at Clarkson Library in November, attracting 12 people.

Mrs Gore said the meetings provided an opportunity for parents and carers to have an open discussion in a safe environment.

“They can come along, sit together and share stories,” she said.

“It’s important they have a network where they can feel supported.

“They can meet other people in a similar situation to themselves; they need to know they are not alone.”

The group meets monthly, with the next session to be held on March 8.

Mrs Gore said they were seeking funding and hoped to offer guest speakers and resources for members in the future.
