TWELVE months into a three-year partnership, about 270 students have taken part in BeachSAFE activities in Alkimos and 76 adults have done first aid training.

An agreement between Surf Life Saving WA and Alkimos Beach developers offers free BeachSAFE programs focused on supervision, aquatic education, first aid and emergency preparedness.

The community also has access to an activation zone, offering SLSWA supervision and water safety education at the beach over the summer school holidays.

In the past year, 272 students at St James’ Anglican School have participated in BeachSAFE school programs and 76 adults have taken up First Aid training.

Lendlease WA communities business general manager Anthony Rowbottam said a training scorecard released this month showed the impact of the programs on the community so far.

“The results show a great need for beach safety education, with 60 per cent of adult participants having an international home country where beach safety was not part of the culture,” he said.

“Additionally 30 per cent of student participants were unfamiliar with the beach before the program.

“The next 12 months promise to be even bigger and better with this summer’s program running like a standard club season where local community members can volunteer with paid lifeguards and surf trainers teaching surf babies, surf kids and the community surf rescue certificate.”

The program is available to residents of the wider City of Wanneroo.

Another highlight of the first year was that 435 people used the activation zone in the 2015-16 summer school holidays.

Next summer, awareness and surf survival education programs on the beach will include SurfKids and SurfBabies. Visit surflifesavingwa.com.au /our-beaches/beachsafe.
