Cadets dig in with planting

Staff ReporterNorth Coast Times

Cadet instructor Scott Michael said the 53 cadets and teachers visited the foreshore reserve in Mindarie late last month to help the City of Wanneroo rehabilitate the dunes.

‘The students planted out the area with species that are native to the local area to assist in the restoration of the sand dunes,’ he said.

Mr Michael said they had been working with the City since mid-2013 to rehabilitate the Quinns Rocks coastline and planted 2000 seedlings there in July.

The unit had also adopted the Kahana bushland in Butler, clearing weeds and rubbish from the area, and planned to plant seedlings there too.

Having cleared more than 200kg of rubbish from Quinns Beach last year, the cadets are working with Tangaroa Blue to analyse types and origins of marine debris, and the unit has a partnership with Yanchep National Park rangers to rehabilitate its bushland.
