Camping sites on agenda

Staff ReporterNorth Coast Times

APART from a temporarily closed caravan park, the City of Wanneroo manages only one area zoned for camping.

Following last week’s story about a camping area relinquished into Neerabup National Park, Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the City managed Quinns Rocks Caravan Park, which is undergoing redevelopment, and another camping area in Ashby.

‘The location is Lot 12300, 1240 Wanneroo Road, Ashby, Reserve 834, and can be viewed on the City’s website under the link to ‘Intra Maps’,’ Mrs Roberts said.

‘The City is currently looking at the future development of the Quinns Rock Caravan Park and part of the development of a clear vision for this area will be to consider caravan, mobile homes and camping tourism sites within the potential redevelopment of this park.’

As reported in the Times on June 17, residents called for a list of available camping areas within Wanneroo’s boundaries so they could take children and grandchildren camping ‘close to home’.

Mrs Roberts said provision of affordable tourist accommodation was a statewide issue.

‘With the parcels of land within the City of Wanneroo under the care and control of the government, the City would encourage the government to also consider if there are any other areas within the northern metropolitan area that could be suitable,’ she said.

The Department of Local Government has invited comment on its review of the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Act 1995 until September 1. For more details, visit www.dlg.wa.gov.au.
