HUNDREDS of residents, friends and family headed to the Alkimos foreshore on December 21 for the first Carols by the Sea.

The sound of favourite carols floated over Waterfront Park as the sun set in a fiery ball over the ocean and people enjoyed picnics.

The free event, organised by Shorehaven estate developer Peet, had been scheduled for early December but was postponed due to a poor weather forecast.

St James Anglican Church helped run the event, with the Free Spirit Choir leading the carols, and Santa arrived in a fire truck thanks to Yanchep Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service.

Butler resident Jo Watson said her children Rocco (8) and Lola (3) enjoyed getting their faces painted and making Christmas ornaments for the tree.

“We all had an amazing time and we were there right to the end,” she said.

“To top it off, we got to enjoy a beautiful sunset.”

In another first for the area, round eight of the Swimming WA Open Water Swimming series will take place near Waterfront Park this Sunday from 7.30am to 10.30am.
