AN eight-year-old child in a parked car was confronted by a man armed with two knives during a crime spree, West Australian police say.

The 39-year-old man allegedly attempted to wound an 18-year-old woman while armed with the knives at a Northam shopping centre, 100km northeast of Perth, on Sunday morning.

A short time later, he is alleged to have stabbed a 63-year-old man inside the same centre.

The injured man received a wound to his back and was treated at the Northam Hospital.

Police said the accused man, still armed with the knives, then entered a parked car with the child inside.

The child’s parent saw the incident and pleaded with the man to get out of the car, and he ran from the scene.

The man, from Northam, faces charges including attempt to unlawfully kill, aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and intentionally do grievous bodily harm unlawfully wounding another.

He was also charged with attempted armed robbery and possessing child exploitation material, and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday.
