City holds Naidoc celebration

The City of Wanneroo held its fourth annual event on July 3 ahead of Naidoc Week this week, with Nyungar elders Doolann Leisha and Walter Eatts giving the ‘Welcome to Country’.

The event was held at the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre, and Mayor Tracey Roberts acknowledged work done by the Reconciliation Action Plan working group over the past two years.

Motown tribute singers The Merindas performed, and one member of the group, Candice Lorrae Dempsey sang a solo.

Attendees, including eight school groups, were given free rolls and participated in a range of activities, including face and nail painting and making wristbands in the colours of the Aboriginal flag.
