LIBRARIES in the City of Wanneroo and Wanneroo Museum will be open on Sundays as part of a trial extension.

At its March meeting, the council agreed to extend the trial run at Wanneroo Library to Clarkson Library and the museum.

The decision follows positive feedback for the 11am to 3pm opening hours trial that started last October and will extend to the other facilities from July 1.

“Extending the opening hours at the museum and Clarkson Library will provide more people with the opportunity to access the many free services that are available,” Mayor Tracey Roberts said.

Mrs Roberts said those services included the connected computer facilities, access to library resources and use of children’s areas.

She said extended hours of the museum in the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre on Dundebar Road would increase convenience for residents interested in history and encourage new visitors.

Cr Dot Newton said she was pleased the trial would be rolled out to other libraries and welcomed the move to open the museum on Sundays too.

“With today’s work hours that people do, to have a library open Sunday is really good,” she said.

At the February 26 briefing session, community and place director Debbie Terelinck said the Wanneroo trial had been “very successful”.

Mrs Terelinck said the City want to expand the trial to Wanneroo Museum and Clarkson library for 12 months as a result.

“The research that we’ve undertaken (shows) a lot of people, particularly families, are more likely to access museums on weekends,” she said.

Mrs Terelinck said Clarkson was the City’s busiest library.

The council also agreed to align Girrawheen Library’s Tuesday evening opening hours were altered to align with the Yanchep Two Rocks Library, from an 8pm closure to a 5.30pm closure, and extended its Saturday opening hours from 12pm to 1pm.

The museum’s Thursday opening hours will also change from a 5pm closure to a 4pm closure.

Mrs Terelinck said the City was doing a broader review of operating hours at all its library and cultural facilities for 2020 and beyond and would report back to the council towards the end of this trial.
