Clarkson man celebrates 95th birthday by climbing a tree

CLARKSON resident Derrick Melhuish celebrated his 95th birthday climbing the Gloucester Tree in Pemberton on Saturday.

This was the 18th time Mr Melhuish, who was born on December 8, 1922, climbed the 53m tall tree and he hopes to be back next year.

The Gloucester Tree is the world’s tallest fire lookout tree, and has 153 pegs to the top, and Mr Melhuish climbed to the top and back down unassisted without any ropes or harnesses.

A few friends sang him Happy Birthday at the top of the tree.
