Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

THE Salvation Army Merriwa and Merriwa Primary School will team up again this festive season to host Community Christmas Carols.

The December 9 event at Addison Park in Merriwa is open to the public, with carols led by the school choir, Salvation Army Balga Band, the Subih Brothers band from Ridgewood and The Circle of Friends Choir.

Before the singing starts, there will be games, balloon twisting, facepainting, a sausage sizzle, coffee van and ice-cream truck from 6pm.

Other community organisations are involved, including MercyCare and True North Church, which has donated candles for the event.

Hoping numbers would exceed last year’s 300 attendees, Major Nikki Novell encouraged people to bring friends and family to celebrate Christmas.

“It’s about bringing the community together and celebrating together,” she said.

Major Novell said carols would include Jingle Bells, Silent Night, Joy to the World, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and Oh Come All Ye Faithful.

She said the Salvation Army was also running its annual Christmas food and toy appeal, and low on food donations.

About 70 local families have already applied to receive gifts through the appeal, with the deadline on November 30, and Major Novell said they would need food for about 100 hampers as well.

To donate before December 17, visit 26 Jenolan Way, Merriwa or call 9305 2131.
