St John Ambulance appointed Mr Hewat to improve and maintain the provision of ambulance services across four shires, while supporting local volunteers.

‘Peter brings a strong clinical background and considerable experience to the region and will be a great support for our volunteers,’ SJA country operations manager Julian Smith said.

‘Since the community paramedic role was introduced for regional WA, local sub-centres have received more support, particularly with volunteer recruitment and training.’

Mr Smith said the full scope of the role varied according to the needs of the area in which community paramedics were based.
