Crews from Offshore Moorings in Cottesloe and Lake Preston Lime teamed up last Wednesday to remove the yacht Thetis II from the beach west of Pipidinny Road.

Offshore Moorings owner David Barnett said they originally expected it to take a couple of days to remove the yacht, but Lake Preston Lime’s equipment made it a faster job.

After winning a tender from the Department of Transport, Mr Barnett said they had considered burying the boat in the beach but it was not deemed suitable.

Instead, they ripped the concrete vessel apart and took the pieces to landfill in Tamala Park.

They salvaged a few metal pieces, such as the mast and internal tanks.

Mr Barnett said normally they would not break apart a stranded vessel.

‘If it hadn’t been burnt out, we would have refloated it,’ he said.

The yacht beached during stormy weather last July.

The Department of Transport has said it would try to reclaim the removal costs from its owner.
