Mindarie Regional Council recently took delivery of an excavator, bought with a Waste Authority grant, that it is using to divert material from landfill.

The excavator, a Sumitomo SH160-5 with an operating weight of 16,600kg, is fitted with a manual grab so it can pick through waste delivered to the Tamala Park landfill site.

‘Since September 27, when the excavator first started operating, we have sent 70.41 tons of metal from the tip-face and 450 mattresses off site for recycling. Not bad for 11 days work,’ resource recovery manager Mike Myring said.

MRC plans to eventually recover timber, e-waste and other recyclable materials from landfill as well.
