The Salvation Army and Merriwa Primary School have teamed up to host Carols by Candlelight at Addison Park for the first time.

Lieutenant Scott Ellery said the Salvation Army had held carols services in their car park on Jenolan Way, but this year decided to expand the community event.

‘Merriwa Primary School students have prepared some special Christmas performances and the Women’s Healthworks choir will be supporting our efforts the entire night,’ Lt Ellery said.

‘I also believe that Santa Claus might make an appearance.’

Lt Ellery said the Salvation Army Brass Band would perform as well, with the carols starting at 6pm.

‘People are welcome to come earlier and have a picnic on the oval,’ he said.

‘There will also be a barbecue and drinks provided for purchasing at the event, (and) carol books, candles and glow sticks available.

‘This will be the start of an exciting community event as other groups get involved in future years.’

Merriwa PS principal Sue Waterhouse said the school community was pleased to be involved in the December 6 sale, where they would also be collecting donations for community hampers.
