Girls set for jamboree

Lauren PedenNorth Coast Times

About 1000 Girl Guides from across the country will attend the week-long Great Bunya Gathering, along with international groups.

In a letter supporting its application to the City, Quinns Rock Guide Unit leader Renee Lewis said jamborees provided experiences where Guides could use their theory training while reinforcing their seven Guiding principles.

"Jamboree happens only every three years and it is the ultimate culmination of a Guide's hard work and dedication," she said.

Cr Hugh Nguyen said the Quinns Rocks Gumblossom Girl Guides provided a safe and supportive environment for young girls in the community to learn important skills and tools for life.

"In this modern and increasingly competitive society, there is a real need to develop leadership and decision-making skills in our young people from an early age," he said.

He said these abilities, along with strong leadership skills, would give the girls a competitive edge when entering the workforce.

"It will equip them well for the rest of their lives," he said.

"I am proud to be part of a council that is both caring and supportive of our community and its young people."
