Goodstart Early Learning Merriwa teaches cultural reconciliation

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

CULTURAL reconciliation has been part of the learning experience at a Merriwa child care centre.

Yanchep National Park’s cultural tours guide Derek Nannup recently visited Goodstart Early Learning Merriwa to facilitate an indigenous experience.

The program enabled children to connect with their community, develop positive attitudes and respect for cultural practices as well as develop skills for communication and interaction across cultures.

The service also recently received a reconciliation action plan approved by the Narragunnawali program, which supports knowledge of and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions.

Centre director Natasha Browne said that plan acknowledged the team’s commitment to ongoing learning, building on cultural competence and engaging children to participate in the wider community.

The centre wants a flag pole that will help achieve its reconciliation commitments and engage the children further in flag raising ceremonies.
