A 29-year-old man has died after he disappeared while swimming in the Moore River in Guilderton.

About 7.30pm last night the man went missing while swimming with a friend near a pontoon.

WA Police Airwing and Lancelin Volunteer Marine Rescue searched the area.

About 10.30pm the body of the man was located.

Lancelin Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the young man,” Shire of Gingin President Cr Sam Collard said.

“It is a tragic loss of a young life.”

Lancelin Police sergeant Steve McCrae urged people to be careful in the water.

“This terrible tragedy is a timely reminder to our communities to be extra diligent around water, whether swimming at a river, beach, pool or other water body,” he said.

“It is so important to know your limits when you’re in the water, and use flotation devices if you need to.

“We extend our sincerest sympathy to the young man’s family.”
