VIDEO conferencing from Lancelin to Perth should help treat patients in emergencies.

Not-for-profit community health and social care provider Silver Chain recently became the Emergency Telehealth Service (ETS) provider for the coastal town.

The WA Country Health Service initiative enables Silver Chain nurses to access emergency medicine specialists in Perth using video conferencing equipment at the Lancelin Primary Health Centre.

Silver Chain country services general manager Carole Bain said it meant when nurses treated patients in emergency situations, expert advice would be a call away.

“Historically, people living in regional and remote areas of WA have had limited access to specialist emergency care,” Ms Bain said.

“ETS is providing more people with access to potentially life-saving emergency medicine support.

“Our primary health centre in Lancelin will be trialling the service for the next 12 months.”

Health Minister Kim Hames said even though Lancelin was only 90 minutes from Perth, its isolation and busy tourist season put pressure on staff at the centre.

The service was launched on December 8 by Moore MLA Shane Love.
