Heritage petition likely to get airing with City of Wanneroo council

THIS month’s City of Wanneroo council agenda is likely to include a report on a petition objecting to removing Two Rocks Shopping Centre and the Waugal sculptures from a heritage list.

The City’s administration is considering the 60-signature petition, presented in May, as part of its review of the Local Heritage Survey.

The petition objected to the loss of public open space, amenity and inter-cultural heritage values and raised concerns about the possibility of demolition of the sites.

It said “loss of a cultural icon such as Bond’s First Settlers Village” could leave the council’s decision “open to national and international shame”.

The council was due to consider removing 17 sites from the list in March but after questions from councillors it was withdrawn from the agenda.

A petition update on the June 28 agenda said City administration was likely to present a report at the July 19 meeting.
