FIND a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck.

That was the saying that went through Michelle Hysen’s mind just before West Coast defeated Hawthorn to go straight through to this weekend’s AFL preliminary final.

A diehard Eagles supporter, the Clarkson Community High School administration officer said after she left work that Friday afternoon, she remembered she had left flowers on her desk.

“I was filling the car up with petrol and thought I better go back and get them,” she said.

“When I got to the school I found 20 cents on the steps and picked it up. I went home and I said ‘this is an omen, we’re going to win tonight’ and we did.”

She said it was an amazing feeling to beat Hawthorn and she was “pretty excited” in the lead- up to this weekend’s clash and possibly a spot on the grand final stage.

“I think we’re a good chance,” she said. We’ve done better than anyone ever anticipated this year.”

She said she would prefer not to have a derby grand final.

“I think you’re either Eagles or Dockers,” she said.

On the other hand, mad Fremantle supporter Sandy O’Neill, who works next to Ms Hysen, said she would love to see a derby grand final.

“The only down side is there can only be one winner,” she said.

With flights to Melbourne and accommodation already booked for the grand final, Ms O’Neill said she was “very anxious but very excited” in the lead-up to this weekend’s deciding match. “I’m just glad to be there,” she said.

With the school administration office clearly divided, she said there was plenty of friendly rivalry. “We have a few digs and smart comments but it’s always for fun,” she said
