A GROUP of northern suburbs residents are teaming up to host a fundraising community event promoting health and fitness.

Mindarie residents Helen Randall and Jody Hockey, Jindalee’s Dewald ‘Ghupi’ Venter and Greenwood’s Athina Merkouris will hold the free Just Breathe event in Mindarie on May 14.

It aims to bring together local businesses who promote health and fitness, performers and entertainment at Abbeville Oval.

The inaugural event will raise money for Cystic Fibrosis WA, a charity Mr Venter has supported through his magic shows since his cousin died in 2009 of the condition that causes mucous build up in lungs, airways and the digestive system.

“Cystic fibrosis runs in my family,” he said.

“About 11 people that I personally know have passed from cystic fibrosis.”

Mrs Randall said she hoped the event would turn into an annual fundraiser, with different charities supported each year.

“We want to expand it so it’s all about healthy lifestyle and healthy living,” she said.

“We want (people) to see what’s available in the area for them to stay active and stay fit.

“We’ve come up with the concept of ‘just breathe’ because when you are in physical activity that’s the hardest part.”

Mr Venter said the charity’s 65 roses campaign every May arose after a boy overheard his mother talking about cystic fibrosis and thought she said “65 roses”.

Mrs Randall, who runs HelFit personal training, will instruct group fitness classes throughout the day, which participants can join for a gold coin donation.

“We are going to give 65 minutes of exercise in aid of that 65 roses concept,” she said.

“The program that we are going to be delivering will be a cystic fibrosis workout but everyone in the community can do it.”

There will be live entertainment from local singers and performers, including the Subih Brothers, Nez Erok, twins Katie and Emilie Graham and other local singers.

Demonstrations and activities include a performance by professional belly dancing group Zahara Dance Company, Metro Modelling School, Step into Life Clarkson, Little Athletics, Overwhelm Mixed Martial Arts and West Coast Wolverines Grid Iron Club.

The family event will also have bouncy castles, face painting, balloon twisting, various sporting demonstrations and a sausage sizzle.

Organisers said local businesses and performers had donated their time to the event, and the Spud Shed had donated fresh fruit.

They were also looking for a butcher or grocery store to donate sausages and buns for the sausage sizzle.
