Staff WriterNorth Coast Times

LEDGE Point Country Club will host the 11th annual Ledge Point Sandcastle Competition on Sunday, January 27.

Families can build sandcastles at the swimming beach between the groynes from 9.30am before judging takes place 11.15am, with a sausage sizzle and announcement of winners to follow at the club.

There will be three sections – one for family groups of up to six people with a maximum of two adults, another for groups of up to four aged eight and older, and the third for seven-year-olds and under with a maximum of four people.

Organiser Sheryl Dempster said last year 174 people took part, building 41 sculptures, with club volunteers serving almost 200 sausages and rolls.

“This is a very family orientated event – watching parents getting involved is great,” she said.

“It is a fun day, with people bringing a huge range of implements to complete their sculptures, some of which could be 3sq m.

“One year a local built a pool table, complete with cues and balls – he arrived with shovels and a level to make sure it was perfect.

“The family section is absolutely amazing, and well worth a visit.

“Originally it was held in conjunction with a raft race for the adults and to keep the children amused, started the sandcastle competition.

“As many families left the town, the raft race was discontinued.”

The event is sponsored by the Shire of Gingin and the country club.
