Local government leaders during the Tri-Cities visit to Canberra.

Mayors and chief executives from the cities of Joondalup, Wanneroo and Stirling visited Canberra last month for their second Tri-Cities advocacy trip.

Moore MHR Ian Goodenough said they met with staff from Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss office to lobby for funding for the three projects.

As there are more than 600 local governments across Australia, federal ministers can sometimes get overwhelmed by the sheer number of funding applications, he said.

West Australian local governments also have the challenge of distance from Canberra and less political representation than more populous states.

Mr Goodenough said the Tri-Cities alliance represented more than 30 per cent of Perths population, giving them more profile as a region and more bargaining power.

He said they also screened a promotional development video and gave speeches to a group of six WA MPs on August 19.
