Making pitch for campers

Staff ReporterNorth Coast Times

The State Government launched its Outdoors October calendar last week, which includes more than 120 events around the State.

Environment Minister Albert Jacob said one of the highlights would be the Great Aussie Camp Out at Yanchep this Saturday, October 11.

‘It will introduce families to the joys of camping in an encouraging and supportive environment and help them increase their confidence to make camping part of their lifestyle,’ he said.

‘We have so many inspiring natural places; try camping as a great way of spending time in nature, as well as reconnecting with family and friends away from the normal routines of life.’

As part of the free event, Nature Play WA, the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Outdoors WA and the Caravan Industry Association of WA will join forces to offer ‘Intro to Camping 101’ to first-time or inexperienced campers.

There will be another Great Aussie Camp Out at the Ern Halliday Recreation Camp from Friday to Saturday, and at several other locations around WA on October 11.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said Nature Play WA had launched a series of short films for first-time campers, which explained where to find camping spots, where to pitch a tent and how to light a campfire.

‘This year’s theme of ‘Go On, Get Outdoors’ encourages those with little experience of getting outdoors to have some fun and take the first steps,’ Mr Waldron said.
