Marina upgrade on its way

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

The car park and boat ramp upgrade has $1.17 million allocated to it. Transport officials said site work would start today to improve the parking layout.

Acting coastal infrastructure general manager Donna West said the car park work should be finished by late June, then they hoped to upgrade the boat ramp by October.

Ms West said a 50m long floating finger jetty would be installed, which would enable three boats to park on either side, and the existing jetty removed.

"We are widening the ramp, then putting this finger jetty in the middle," she said.

"We are going to be trying to make sure it will stay open as much as possible. If it does have to close for one or two days, we will give people advanced warning." Transport Minister Dean Nalder said $518,000 came from the recreational boating facilities scheme and the department had found another $670,000 for the car park resurfacing.

North Metropolitan MLC Peter Katsambanis said the funding would provide a better boating facility for northern suburbs residents.

"With the rapid population growth in the Two Rocks and Yanchep area, the demand for boating facilities continues to increase," he said.

Butler MLA John Quigley said any money spent on the marina was welcome, nevertheless more should be done.

"What the community desperately needs is two extra boat ramps because the queue to launch boats in summer can be up to two hours," he said.

"What is being proposed is largely cosmetic."
