Merriwa couple celebrate 70th anniversary

MERRIWA couple John (92) and Peggy (89) Durbin are celebrating their 70th anniversary today.

The couple, who live in the RAAFA Cambrai Village, were both born in Bristol, England and married on September 11, 1948.

They have two daughters, Susan and Trudy, six grandsons and 12 great-grandchildren.

The couple moved to Australia in the 1980s, having lived in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia and Southern Rhodesia) since 1957.

Mr Durbin worked as a carpenter, policeman and Natural Resources Board secretary as well as on his ranches near Bulawayo, while his wife was a homemaker and worked in administration.

They later employed stone and wood sculptors while living in Victoria Falls.

Mr Durbin received the French Legion of Honour medal in 2015 recognising his service during the liberation of France in World War II.
