Merriwa park upgrades planned for sports clubs

WANNEROO Council has endorsed a $1.56 million plan to turn a Merriwa park into an active reserve for sports clubs.

At the July 30 council meeting, councillors noted a schedule to design change rooms and parking at Dalvik Park next financial year and build it in 2021-22.

A council report said the park was used for passive recreation by the community and Alkimos Baptist College, located nearby, used it for about 40 hours a week.

“The City has received a number of requests from local sporting clubs enquiring about the possibility of using the park as a venue for training and competition games,” the report said.

“This is currently not possible due to the lack of car parking and facilities at the reserve.”

The City received 12 submissions during public consultation, with the majority supporting use of the park for sport and the provision of change rooms.

“The response from current consultation indicates a high level of support for the use of Dalvik Park for organised sport,” the report said. Submissions also raised concerns about parking and whether access would be closed for dog walkers.

The report also listed floodlight installation in 2022-23, which could cost another $373,000, and said the concept design allowed a for future addition of a multipurpose room.

It follows confirmation last month that the City planned to replace the playground at Dalvik Park this financial year.
