Young West Australian of the Year Michael Sheldrick, of Mindarie, has been recognised for his global campaigns.

The former Mindarie Senior High School student edged out friend and Young Australian of the Year Akram Azimi for the award.

Michael, who works for the Global Poverty Project, is also heavily involved in the End of Polio campaign. In 2011, at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth, he helped secure $118 million towards the eradication of polio.

Michael was unable to collect his award in person at the awards night at Crown Perth on June 1 because he was in Tanzania working on a project to improve education.
