Mindarie: Halloween fundraiser helping others overcome mental health demons

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

FRIENDS will host a Halloween event in Mindarie again this year to help others overcome their demons.

Jody Hockey, Sarah Hills and Taryn Teeuwissen are preparing Mrs Hockey’s house for the haunting US holiday on October 31. They are inviting trick or treaters visiting the Birkenhead Ridge house to make donations to beyondblue, which helps people dealing with depression and anxiety.

Last year, they raised $2000 for the charity and Mrs Hockey said they hoped to collect $3000 this time.

The event is a tribute to two friends who used to celebrate Halloween with them before committing suicide last year.

To improve the experience for increasing numbers of visitors, they are planning to set up a ‘haunted marquee’ and local illusionist Dewald ‘Ghupi’ Venter will perform his magic tricks.

They will also have a raffle, with tickets costing $2 each or three for $5.

Mrs Hockey has delivered about 200 balloons to neighbours, inviting them to display balloons if they want trick or treaters to visit and to discourage children from disturbing houses without balloons.

beyondblue provides information and support to help Australians achieve their best possible mental health.
