SPORTING groups are the winners after the State Government fulfilled a $400,000 funding promise for Abbeville Park.

Burns Beach MLA Mark Folkard had promised funds for sporting facilities upgrades at the Mindarie park in the lead up to the State Election, however initially the State Government only allocated $10,000 to the City of Wanneroo.

Mindarie Football Club secretary Neil Gornell told the Times the groups that used the park, including Mindarie Mustangs Little Athletics Club, needed upgrades to provide storage and lighting so they could grow.

Premier Mark McGowan visited the park with Mr Folkard on Friday to announce the full funding allocation.

“I am pleased to announce that the funding has been delivered in full for these much anticipated upgrades,” Mr Folkard said.

“My office will be working closely with local sporting clubs and the City of Wanneroo to plan the upgrades and ensure that local residents get the modern sporting facilities that they need.”

Pearce MHR Christian Porter campaigned with the clubs to put pressure on the State member to deliver on the pre-election promise.

“WA Labor made a critical election promise of $400,000 to the local community to upgrade the facilities at Abbeville Park,” he said.

Mr Porter said local sporting groups who were relying on the upgrades contacted him when the funding was not included in the State Budget.

“Thank you to everyone who rose to the challenge, showed your community support and signed the petition,” he said.

Abbeville Park is also used by the Quinns Rocks junior and senior cricket clubs and Mindarie Primary School.
