AN oval at Yanchep National Park became a competition ground for the inaugural NAIDOC Olympics last month.
Yanchep District High School Year 5 and 6 students competed in the traditional Aboriginal Games on June 22.
“Noongar presenter Derek Nannup assisted the park to create a tabloid style games event featuring traditional Aboriginal games,” teacher Judith Birchall said.
“The students participated in spear throwing, message stick relay and games that imitated Australian animals and traditional hunting and gathering.

READ NOW“The children finished off the day re-enacting stories through movement accompanied by Derek on the didgeridoo.”
Mrs Birchall said they hoped other schools would get involved in the competition next year.
