Narcotics Anonymous to get free use of Jenolan Way Community Centre until December

Lucy JarvisNorth Coast Times

At its April 4 meeting, the council approved a 100 per cent waiver of fees for the group to use Merriwa facility between March and December.

In line with council policy, the staff recommendation had been to refuse the $2231.70 request, but councillor Linda Aitken successfully moved an amendment to approve the full waiver.

Cr Aitken said the not-for-profit organisation ran on gold coin donations and the council had previously supported it through a 100 per cent waiver.

Cr Lara Simpkins supported the amendment, saying the fee waiver was a “tiny comparison” to what the group put back into the community through its abstinence program.

“The use and addiction to drugs is a major issue in WA and the City of Wanneroo,” she said.

Cr Nat Sangalli said apart from Merriwa, the nearest support group was in Joondalup and having to leave the local area could bring on anxiety for people dealing with drug addictions.

“It’s meeting twice a week now instead of once a week so there’s definitely a demand for this,” she said.

Narcotics Anonymous meets at 16 Jenolan Way on Mondays at 6pm and on Saturdays at 10am.
